Meet Our Coaches

Doug Davinroy

Doug Davinroy

6th Grade Boys Coach

The game of basketball has offered me opportunities to develop relationships, understand how to learn from winning and losing, and be mentored by great coaches. As far back as I can remember I’ve been around the game of basketball…a typical gym rat. My Dad was a high school basketball coach and ref, and my mom coached cheerleading. I played high school basketball in the Southern Illinois town of Collinsville, a tradition-rich basketball town where I learned the importance of fundamentals from the best coaches around. At Collinsville, I developed lifelong relationships with teammates, alumni, coaches, and fans that have been valuable to me throughout my life. FUN FACT: While playing at Collinsville in the '90s, we were the winningest boy’s high school basketball program of all-time. Unfortunately, we have fallen to 4th place as of 2017.

As an adult, I have had the opportunity to coach my children’s teams. Watching young players develop leadership, team cohesion, mental toughness along with improving their individual, fundamental skills is my focus. I’m a believer that the principles of achievement on the court overlap with the principles necessary to achieve in any professional career. I am passionate about making a positive impact on young players lives.

The game of basketball has been so good to my family and me. We feel so fortunate to help mentor young players and be able to teach them the game of basketball and life. THANK YOU ALL for this opportunity.

Jake Elliott

Jake Elliott

He was named to the all-tournament team in the Beach Ball Classic alongside Kevin Garnet. Received some scholarship offers to play basketball in college but decided to pursue a career in beach volleyball. Jake made it into the AVP (Professional Volleyball Tour) in 1997 and played professionally all over the world for 12 years. After his career in volleyball he got his real estate license and started up a hardwood flooring and reclaimed lumber company with his brother Glenn called Elliott Brothers Woodworks. Kevin Knight

Kevin Knight

9th Grade Boys Coach

Over the last five years, Coach Knight has coached basketball for Pinckney Elementary, Cario Middle, and Low Country Storm. He has coached over 200 youth basketball games during that time. Coach Knight's teams won the city championship in the Trident basketball league three times. His Storm team also won the 2018 USBA South Carolina 8th grade state championship. Coach Knight's philosophy on basketball is that the most important priority for a coach is to ensure the players love the game. He believes that 80% of motivation should be encouraged and that by doing so players will give their very best in return.

Matthew Maksimowitz

Matthew Maksimowitz

7th Grade Boys Coach

Growing up in New Jersey with a high school basketball coach as a stepfather, Matt spent hours in the gym on a daily basis, caught the basketball bug early in life and it has never left him.  He began coaching at youth basketball summer camps at the age of 14 and did so thru his high school years.  He has played and coached on and off for most of his life and most recently coached 5th grade at Mt. Pleasant Academy and 6th & 7th grade at Moultrie Middle school.  Matt believes in teaching the principles of team basketball so that the success of the team is greater than the sum of its parts.  Matt prides himself on putting together hard-nosed teams with sound fundamentals and an intense defensive makeup who play smart team basketball.  Most importantly he wants his players to have fun and fall in love with the game of basketball like he has.  Matt and his wife live in Mt. Pleasant with their two sons, Miles and Owen.

Law Murdock

Law Murdock

6th Grade Boys Coach

This will be Coach Law's 2nd season coaching for the Low Country Storm. Coach Law was born and raised in Columbia, SC, where he attended Hammond Academy and The University of South Carolina. Growing up his passion was always basketball but he also enjoyed soccer and baseball. He and his family moved to Mt Pleasant 4 yrs ago. Previously, Coach Law has coached many youth teams. He coached youth girls soccer for 6 years, youth baseball for 3 years and will be entering his 7th year as a youth boys basketball Coach. He loves teaching the game of basketball and watching the boys develop into fine young men as well as student athletes. According to his player's parents, it's worth the price of admission to watch his expressions and antics on the sidelines. Last summer in Storm's 1st season, Coach Law and Coach Jake led their Storm team to three 1st place finishes and two 2nd place finishes. Most notably one of the 2nd place finishes was in Wilmington, NC. The championship game was held at Laney High School, where Michael Jordan played. Not many players can say they played on the same court as Air Jordan. It was an experience the boys will never forget. Coach Law is super excited about the upcoming Storm season. "Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose"

Matt Laydon

Matt Laydon

11th Grade Boys Coach

Over the past six years, I have had the opportunity to coach at Point Guard College, Moultrie Middle School, Daniel Island middle school and with Lowcountry Storm.  We’ve won a few games and lost a few too, but in the end, what has meant the most is the relationships I’ve formed with my guys.  I believe in hard-nosed, fundamental basketball, and teaching kids HOW to play in contrast to teaching them to run plays.  My greatest coaching moments have been seeing players do more than they believe they are capable of when it matters most.

Josh Soper

Josh Soper

8th & 9th Grade Girls Coach

Coach Josh Soper is a former Division III collegiate basketball player and a USA Basketball Gold Certified Coach.  As a former Randolph-Macon College basketball player, Coach Soper was fortunate to play for, and with, some of the current top college and college prep school coaches in the country.  During his playing days at RMC, he helped lead the Yellow Jackets to three NCAA tournaments.  Coach Soper attributes much of his successful 20-year career in the IT Staffing & Services business to his experiences playing the game of basketball and he has a passion for sharing those experiences through coaching.  He has coached Christ Our King-Stella Maris 5th grade girls and Daniel Island School 6th and 7th grade girls teams.  He has also helped coach an 8th grade boys Cario Middle School team.  He helped lead these teams to the Trident Championship Game.  This is Coach Soper’s 2nd year coaching for the Lowcountry Storm.  He is a defense first minded coach who truly believes that offense makes the team feel good, but the defense is what brings the team together.  His passion is building strong relationships with his players and holding them to a high standard of excellence both on and off the court.  He strongly values the life lessons basketball teaches his players, lessons that are not always learned in a classroom.  Coach Soper lives on Daniel Island with his wife Jean, his three daughters, Catherine Grace, Ella, and Wren and their fluffy golden retriever, Harmony.
